The Subaru 360, introduced in 1958 by Fuji Heavy Industries, was Japan’s first mass-produced passenger car and a cornerstone of the country’s kei car movement. Designed to be affordable and efficient during Japan’s post-war recovery, it used a lightweight monocoque body and a rear-mounted, air-cooled two-stroke engine. Nicknamed the “Ladybug” for its rounded shape, the 360 made car ownership accessible to thousands of Japanese families. Produced until 1971, it established Subaru as a serious automaker and laid the foundation for the company’s later engineering-driven identity.
